Tour Overview
Tokyo is a whirlwind of colour, razzmatazz and life, but scratch the surface and you'll be transported into a world of cultural mystery & intrigue unique to Japan. You'll get a real flavour of the orient with visits to city markets, before heading out to Hakone to explore the area's famous sulphur pools. You take the bullet train to Tsumago, nestled amidst the Japanese Alps. Here you'll hike along forested trails, before speeding through the countryside to Hiroshima to explore the medieval castle of Himeji.
Kyoto Temples & Shrines
Kyoto is full of shrines, temples and gardens and is surrounded by tranquil waters. One of the most famous sights in Japan is the golden folds of the Kinkaku-ji Temple which you will explore. Heading into the hills to Mt. Koya, you'll be treated to a unique experience. Staying with monks, you'll enjoy traditional food and learn about ancient culture at a special morning prayer ceremony - surely helping to solve the mystery of the enigmatic appeal of Japan!
Spring Cherry Blossom Departures
In the spring there is an explosion of colour and festivities with the arrival of the cherry blossoms. Known locally as 'sakura' this is the national flower of Japan. Cherry blossom viewing and celebrations have been a custom in Japan since the 7th century when the aristocrats cultivated cherry blossom gardens. Departures in March provide the chance to see this natural wonder.
Distinctive Accommodation
You'll mostly stay in comfortable, modern hotels of international standard. The hotel in Hakone has magnificent views of Mt. Fuji. You will sleep on a futon in Japanese-style rooms in a traditional ryokan at Tsumago and the Buddhist temple at Mt. Koya. There are shared bathrooms at both properties.
