WarningTravelers are advised against all but essential travel to Liberia.
Following the transfer of Charles Taylor to the Hague on 20 June 2006, the possibility of disturbances related to his detention and trial by the Special Court of Sierra Leone remains. Travelers are advised to remain vigilant and avoid large crowds and demonstrations.
UN peacekeepers are deployed to the main population centers and patrol major roads, but the security situation remains unpredictable. There are sporadic demonstrations, and the possibility of violence remains. Travelers should remain vigilant and avoid crowds and demonstrations.
Visitors should avoid traveling alone, particularly at night and to secluded places.
For those deciding to travel outside Monrovia, it is recommended that they do not overnight outside the city and that they check the security situation before traveling.
Travelers should carry photographic identification at all times.
The threat from terrorism is low.

Health CareInternational travelers are strongly advised to take out full medical insurance before departure. Hospitals are gradually re-emerging in Liberia, but some patients may still need evacuation to medical facilities in Côte d’Ivoire.
Note1A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travelers over one year of age. Note that the certificate must be presented with all visa applications.
2Following WHO guidelines issued in 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is not a condition of entry to Liberia. However, cholera is a serious risk in this country and precautions are essential. Up-to-date advice should be sought before deciding whether these precautions should include vaccination, as medical opinion is divided over its effectiveness.
3Typhoid is widespread and poliomyelitis is still endemic.
4Malaria risk, predominantly in the malignant
falciparum form, exists all year throughout the country. High resistance to chloroquine and resistance to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine has been reported. The recommended prophylaxis is mefloquine.
