There’s more to culture than scratching your chin at the latest Turner Prize winner.

And certainly more to history than staring at old vases in a museum. The world’s remotest cultures are now easily accessible, and today’s history holidays mean it has never been easier to get out there and experience them at first hand.

It doesn’t matter if you want to tackle the big guns like Taj Mahal and the Pyramids or take the road less travelled: there’s no better way to discover the history of a country than on a culture tour. And there’s really no need for a guidebook when there’s a history buff on hand to bring the past to life, or a local guide happy to share their unique perspective.

Cultural holidays offer worlds of contrast, from classic trips such as the Inca Trail in Peru, where you travel right to the heart of an ancient civilisation and take in the incredible city of Machu Picchu, to something a little easier on the legs, like a quirky moped tour around the birthplace of the Roman Empire.

As far as we’re concerned, seven wonders are nowhere near enough. We’re going to make our own list. And so should you. For starters, choose from archaeology trips, history tours, cultural tours, iconic destinations and food & wine tours, or see our full collection of history and culture holidays below.
